Can I Just Get One Adjustment?

Dr. Mark Vellan Adjusting a Patient

Can I just get one adjustment?

Of course, you can, but getting just one adjustment and calling it quits may not be the best idea for your shoulders, neck, or back -- especially if you are active or spend a lot of time sitting at your desk. When a chiropractor adjusts you, they’re manipulating the vertebrate in your spine back into alignment. However, since the surrounding muscles and ligaments tug on the spine, this fix may be temporary without consistent at-home effort. Little things like poor posture, careless ergonomics, and repeated trauma are why visiting a chiropractor regularly and using a dense foam roller is suggested.

What do regular visits do?

An adjustment helps properly position the ligaments and muscles surrounding your spine, so that they can begin to heal. Those tissues are actively pulling your spine back into its former misaligned position. Dr. Mark Vellan or Dr. Lisa Prusinski will work with you to strengthen and stretch your muscles into the right placement.

If you’ve put off going to the chiropractor for a few months, you may notice your back has become tight and stiff. This stiffening is a result of your muscles trying to immobilize injured joints. This can lead to swelling as well. Not addressing this area can cause even more damage and may put you on the path of chronic conditions, such as arthritis.

What can be done between visits?

As we’ve discussed in previous blogs, the foam roller is an excellent way to maintain your adjustment. Routinely pull out your handy dandy roller and get to work massaging those knots out of your shoulders, legs, and back! As time goes on, you may feel that you have greater control over your symptoms.
